Instructor Michael Menefee, MD, LMT is a graduate of PMTI.

In this course, students will:

• gain a deeper knowledge of the biology of cancer, its etiology, its effects on the human body, and the therapeutic interventions available to treat this devastating disease; 
• learn how therapeutic massage can complement other therapeutic interventions and enhance the quality of life in this population; 
• review safety precautions and contraindications for working with cancer patients; and 
• discuss the benefits of massage during a treatment regimen. 

Students will practice hands-on techniques for working with clients who are affected by cancer and/or cancer treatments, including techniques for working with clients who are bed- or wheelchair-bound. Students will also learn effective communication and how to use an accurate pressure scale. 

Finally, students will learn about the Society for Oncology Massage (S4OM) and career opportunities for Oncologic Massage Therapists.
