Massage for Veterans

This class will prepare massage therapists to offer a safe and adaptive therapeutic massage for those who are actively enlisted or Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces and have transitioned well back into Civilian life. This class will prepare therapists to begin working with veterans and to volunteer at Veteran service and support organizations. Using an education model supported by extensive clinical experience, research, and consultation from VA staff, the class explores Veteran-specific topics including Warrior Culture, professional practices that support the therapeutic alliance, therapist self care, and more.

In the second part of the course massage therapists will learn to work with Veterans who live with Invisible Service Wounds. This part is best suited for those therapists who wish to take their work with veterans to a deeper level. We will explore two main types of invisible wounds related to Service in the United States Armed Forces, traumatic brain injuries and mental health disorders, with focus on depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and military sexual trauma.  Students will learn professional techniques including communication skills and practice methodology that fosters client safety and need for adaptive procedures.

The final day of training is designed to enhance the therapists' skills in client interviewing and professional SOAP note-taking, essential skills for working in the professional context of veteran's massage.

About the instructor: Nicole Miller

In conjunction with Crouse Hospital, Clear Path and the New York Veteran’s Administration, Nicole created a program that trains massage therapists how to embrace a military culture and provide effective intervention for a wide variety of war injuries.  Her graduates have delivered over 40,000 massages to military service members and their families who consistently report profound quality of life improvements following intervention. Crouse Health is the first organization in the United States that offers continuing professional education in massage therapy to present the profession’s first-ever Specialty Certificate in Military Veteran Massage. This program is now being offered for the first time at PMTI.
